If I was there, I would have been like, do you need help? Do you want me to help you go to the hospital and be there for you and you can get a rape kit done, and then we can go together to the police. Rape is a crime. And I will help you all the way…even if it’s hard/painful to talk about the pain, I’ll help all the way.

Cause that’s what a friend would do.

This is not my usual post. But it’s something I had to share. As you read this, imagine how your reaction would differ if this story were being told by a woman, talking about how her husband treated her.

I have been separated from my wife for over a year, though we continue to share a house. We live on separate floors. We share the house because we need to parent our son together, and because we can’t afford to maintain two households.

I’d like to tell you a story, illustrating one reason why I am divorcing her. This is an example of the treatment I have received over the past fourteen years.

This evening, while she was drinking her wine, my estranged wife took exception to the fact that I wanted to talk about how tense she’s been. She said she didn’t want to talk about it.

I left the room (so as to comply with her request).

I went upstairs to use our tiny guest bathroom. She began to yell and throw things around the kitchen, then eventually charged up the stairs and into the bathroom, just as I was finishing and getting ready to leave. She confronted me there, holding her half-full wine glass in her hand. Her voice got louder, her gestures wilder.

She complained that I had upset her by wanting to talk when she had told me she didn’t want to talk. As I began to feel uncomfortable, I said, “You’re saying it’s my fault you can’t express your emotions responsibly like an adult?”

She said, “Yes!! It’s because you want to go off and take a vacation with your girlfriend!” Then she threw the contents of her glass in my face and smashed it against my bare chest.

The results are pictured here.

I stood there, with shattered glass at my feet, glass shards sticking in my skin, bleeding, for five minutes or so. I asked her to move so that I could leave. She waved the broken stem of the glass in the air and said, “Leave!! Who’s stopping you?”

I told her she was standing between me and the door. I felt threatened.

She laughed and said, “You’re 6 foot 3 and 250 pounds! You can’t feel threatened by me!”

I said, “You just broke a glass on my chest and cut me. You’re standing there with the stem in your hands. Yes. I feel threatened.

She said, “No, you don’t.”

I asked her to move out of the way and let me pass. I didn’t want her to think I was pushing her or threatening her.

She held her ground, waved the broken stem and shouted, “Go on! Leave! I’m not stopping you!”

After I asked her repeatedly, she finally moved a bit and I left, carefully stepping over the broken glass.

I have posted this here as evidence, and to help those who may think that size and gender make a difference when abuse is concerned. People who, like my estranged, think some have permission to feel threatened and some don’t.

Abusers come in all sizes and genders.

She and I went to a half dozen therapists over the years. At each initial session, every therapist took a look at me, then at her (5’4” 150 lbs.). Then he or she would gravely ask my wife, “Do you feel safe?”

None ever thought to ask me.

Because this needs to be shared. Because abuse is wrong no matter what. Because this saddens my heart.

with that being said, fuck people who think that women are the only ones that can be abused in a relationship. and fuck crazy women, as well.

Fuck abuse. This should have the ten thousand notes that every women’s domestic abuse case has.

I’m glad to see something like this on my dashboard finally. Not the fact that he got abused by his wife, but to show that not only women are victims of abuse (like so many women claim). It’s a shame that so many stupid people out there think -and defend- only women when it comes to abuse and not men.

Anyone can be abused. ANYONE. I watched a 6’6, 300+ pound guy go through a horribly destructive, abusive relationship. He wasn’t the one doing the abuse.

I’ll admit the hymen is one aspect of the vulva’s anatomy I was never very familiar with, but I found this to be a very interesting read.

I can’t describe how insulting and horrifying I find it when I see people joking about being in an abusive relationship/living with domestic violence. I’m happy for these people that they haven’t had to go through that; I really am. But what the hell is wrong with them they can’t muster up a little bit of sympathy and decency?

Objectively, I know it’s rape culture. It’s rape culture that makes people think it’s ever excusable to hit someone you love. It’s rape culture that allows abusers to maintain their careers and prosper, without real reform or amends. It’s rape culture that lets people feel comfortable joking about it. It’s rape culture that leads to victims being diminished over and over again. It doesn’t matter if it’s Rihanna, undocumented immigrants, or even a dozen young children.

Objectively, I know that. I try to remember that people like the ones who commented here are in this culture too, and they’re just a symptom of the larger problem.

But subjectively? Fuck you. Seriously.

Why I will not engage with anyone who insists on using the term “sexuals”, and justifies that with “but sexuals are privileged!”

+Because I’m a survivor of sexual assault(s), wherein my sexuality was used to degrade, shame, and traumatize me, and after which - still to this day, in fact - my sexual history and status as a sexual woman has been used to trivialize that trauma, deny me accountability and justice for what was done, and justify even further violence against me.

+Because I’m mentally ill, and women with mental illnesses have been non-consensually sexualized, deemed “hypersexual” and “sex addicts” as a means of justifying institutionalized abuse (often sexual abuse) against them, etc, since pretty much the advent of psychology.

+Because the bodies of people of colour, particularly women of colour, are also consistently non-consensually sexualized, and that DIRECTLY contributes to higher rates of sexual violence against women of colour.

+Because I’ve done sex work, and I’m fucking sick of the cultural/social understanding that people who do sex work have no right to ever not be sexual objects, that our bodies are unrapeable, not even bodies at all really but commodities.

+Because I’m queer, and queer people have been demonized as sexual deviants, who are incapable of ever curbing or controlling our (inherently abusive) sexual natures without excessive therapy and “training”, and that’s been used to keep queer people out of work, housing, etc - something that goes double for trans folks, by the way, and if you don’t believe me just look at all the cis people freeeeeeaaaaking the fuck out about trans women simply USING THE WASHROOM with cis women, and how that’s always, always “justified” with shit like “but what if one of those trans women is secretly a sexual predator preying on innocent cis women?!”, and all the violence that that logic has resulted in.

+Because I’m poor and from a poor/working-class background, and am intimately familiar with the stereotype of poor/working-class people as being “classless” and “tacky”, WHICH MEANS inherently sexual (this is why when I was in junior high, the boys at my school would throw pennies at me and the other “welly” - you know, welfare - girls, chanting “penny whore, penny whore” as we walked by).

+Because dividing people into binary categories of “sexual” and “non-sexual” is a STAPLE of enforcing dynamics of marginalization and privilege - where MARGINALIZED PEOPLE are seen as inherently sexual, and therefore dirty, untrustworthy, incapable of real feeling, and most of all unrapeable, while PRIVILEGED PEOPLE are seen as non-sexual, and therefore pure, innocent, intelligent and compassionate, and most of all worthy of protection and empathy.

+And therefore when I see people repeatedly referring to anyone who does not identify as asexual or demisexual as “a sexual” or “sexuals”, and talking about “sexual privilege” and “sexual supremacy”, what I see is someone erasing centuries of MULTIPLE, intersecting oppressions - throwing whole classes of people under the bus, and I hesitate to use that phrase because it is so violent, but that’s what this denial is: it’s a violent denial, violent in that it erases and obfuscates so much real violence, and that erasure is a big part of what enables that violence in society already. It’s harming people, directly, specifically, in order to further discourse about an idea and identity that is still fairly new and still finding it’s place, and that does not bode well for me at all.

This is really fucking important- this language is all too prevalent in the asexual communities on tumblr.
